I hate to be arrogant and condescending, but this is one of the many reasons why people need to understand what they are talking about before opening their big mouths. Just because you are an electrical engineer, does not mean you know anything about how IT, ethernet, wifi, or computers in general work.

Wifi is not just an antenna bolted on to the end of an ethernet cable - there is hardware and software involved in the conversion of one transmission medium to another. It doesn't matter if the source signal is degraded - packets will get retransmitted, latency will increase, but the signal that comes from the WiFi will be however good of output the radio and antenna can manage.

Poor kids, not only is their site like, a throwback to the 90s when people used FrontPage to make 'professional websites', but they are in for a heart attack when they get to the real world and discover that adults use strong language.

Okay, so, rant time again!

Tammy and I went out for burgers tonight to one of those greasy but oh so yummy goodness burger places in Boise. Well, when we got there, we find that half the place is taken up by a few adults and half a dozen kids. Now, I'd be lying if I said that these parents knew how to control their child. It didn't take long before the fun began.

First, there was this creepy young girl who was wandering around the dining room going every which way doing everything and looking at everything. Finally, she eyes Tammy's orange crocs. In a must have moment, the little girl gets down on her hands and knees and starts playing with Tammy's shoes. She tells the little girl, "No, mine, go away." and tries to swipe at the kid like you'd do to a dog trying to hump your leg. The parents finally took notice, and pulled the girl away. All the while, what we believe is the father is giving Tammy dirty looks for yelling at his child.

About 10 minutes later, a different child wanders over to a recently vacated table and walks off with the waitresses' tip. All the while, the parents are completely oblivious and not paying any attention. Finally, the mother notices when the child walks up and hands her the $3 she had just swiped. Still clueless, the woman turns to me and asks where her kid took it from.

Needless to say, it was a very unfun dining experience with the kids making noise and causing utter havoc throughout the dining room. The waitress did not seem pleased with the fact she almost lost her tip to a child with sticky fingers. What happened to parents teaching their kid that it is inappropriate to steal?

The desperation and immaturity of Jonathan Meadows

So, for the past week or so I've got a new obsessive kook pestering me and the AHBL. Jonathan Meadows of KORE Inc (aka kore-net.com, linuxgod.net, sorbs.us, and possibly others) is hellbent of proving just how immature and lame he is.

The mess started with Matthew of SORBS called out Jonathan for violating copyright on images used on his revenge site, sorbs.us. It gradually escilated from there, and we ended up listing him under the AHBL's SOS rules for his behavior towards SORBS.

It took only a few days before he decided to go all out kooky. You can follow the saga on Usenet here. He's also decided to associate himself with the Not-So-FreeSpeechStore.

Oh, and Jonathan, nice try, blocking my IP from viewing your site. CoralCache and AOL web proxies are such great tools.

Imagine if a stealth-bomber crashed because itâ€™s software was written by anonymous Chinese or European hackers. It would make as much sense as inviting the French to come over and take over the White-House.

Hacking the state of the union address... Geeze, we should be so lucky! I don't know of any anonymous 'Chinese or European hackers' working on Linux - but I do know of quite a few non-anonymous Chinese and European programmers who are paid to work on Linux and various parts. There are many American programmers being paid to work on Linux as well.

And guess what software Osama Bin Laden uses on his laptop?

If you guessed it was Linux you would be 100% right. Osama uses Linux because he knows designed to counterfit DVDs, curcumventing the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, and defraud companies like Disney.

Hahaha! I almost wet myself reading that.

If you see a company using Linux, it may be that they have not paid for this software. Report them to the Business Software Alliance who have the legal authority to inspect any companyâ€™s computers for illegal programs like Linux.

Please do report to the BSA that the web server hosting my blog runs Linux. I'd be more then happy to show them that my system runs that 'illegal' Linux operating system!

Finally, remember to include Linux users in your prayers tonight. As individuals we may not be able to change peopleâ€™s minds, but the Bible teaches that God can make any sinner repent.

Yup, I think we've just confirmed how far out in right field this individual is. I'm Buddhist, but thank you anyway for your prayers.

Stopping spam from China the easy and fun way!

So, a lot of people have asked me over the past year or so how I manage to prevent getting so much spam from China without needing to outright block all of China's IP space either in iptables/firewall or DNSbl lists.

Well, I'm about to give you our secret.

The Chinese govt dislikes us (the SOSDG) - alot. We tend to host sites that their govt does not want its people seeing (Falun Gong anyone?).

So, what does any great opressive govt do to sites that are on its banned list? They filter out all of our IP space in their network so their users can't get to our servers.

This does have an interesting side effect though - the filter blocks more then just HTTP traffic (port 80 tcp). SMTP connections are blocked as well. Spammers in China can no longer reach our servers at all.

So, if you want to cut back on spam from China without having to implement blocklists or filters your customers may not appreciate, host a site that pisses the Chinese govt off on your mail servers. I've seen them block new IP ranges hosting Falun Gong sites in under 12 hours.

Easy because it requires no major changes on your end. Fun because you get to irritate everyone's favorite oppressive country and waste their time.
