What is patriotism?

Patriotism is standing up for your rights in the face of others who seek to deny you the rights they take for granted.

Patriotism is knowing full well that you will face hate, ridicule, and bigotry, and still being who you are with no compromises.

Patriotism is protesting the laws and actions of this government when they are based on the demands of a few small loud mouth religious fundamentalist zealots.

Patriotism is electing a president who isn't afraid to show he is a human being, and is willing to admit mistakes.

Patriotism is being an active participant in the world, and not the loud mouth bully that Bush made us out to be for the past 8 years.

In short, some prude made a big deal about two women kissing during a baseball game in Seattle.

Favorite quotes:

"We have a strict non-discrimination policy at the Seattle Mariners and at Safeco Field, and when we do enforce the code of conduct it is based on behavior, not on the identity of those involved," Hale said.

I love trying to save face after the fact.

"I would be uncomfortable" seeing public displays of affection between lesbians or gay men, said Jim Ridneour, a 54-year-old taxi driver. "I don't think it's right seeing women kissing in public. If I had my family there, I'd have to explain what's going on."

And I find that hetero couples kissing in public is offensive and not right, but that doesn't mean I have a right to interfere.

An enlightening piece on the death of Jerry Falwell

Alan Wolfe in Salon.com wrote yesterday a rather interesting and very enlightening piece on the death of hate monger and religious fanatic Jerry Falwell.

I personally hated the man - he embodied everything that makes the rest of the world hate this country. He blamed the victims of 9/11 for the attacks. I can't even describe how much this man disgusted me.

In the responses/blogs/letters to the editors section of the article, there were some rather good quotes:

It is widely reported that Falwell apologized for what he said, but in reality he did no such thing. Instead, he opted for a technicality: the gays, lesbians and feminists weren't personally responsible, but God lifted his protective shield over America and allowed the attacks of 9/11 because of their, and others', immorality.

I'm saddened by Falwell's death precisely because it did not spark such a response in me. My initial reaction was good riddance. It's truly a shame that Falwell's life was so reprehensible and divisive that his death commands so little empathy.

Falwell represented, in simple terms, the very worst aspects of being both an American and being a follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ. As an American, he perpetuated the racist, sexist, heterosexist heritage that is still deeply woven through much of this land of ours. As a Christian, he took the easy road- preaching a message of intolerance, damnation- fire and brimstone as it used to be called.

Amusing bit on a breakdown of H.R. 1592

The Fundie Watch has a rather amusing posting breaking down the article posted by OneNewsNow.

OneNewsNow, also known as American Family News (AFN), calls themselves a "national Christian news service". Though, after reading quite a bit into their site, calling them a bunch of religious fundies is appropriate.

Disturbing comments by the right about 'correcting' homosexuality

So, I've been sitting on this for a few weeks now, unsure how to respond exactly.

It bugs the crap out of me.

For some time now, scientists have been looking for a genetic or hormonal cause of sexual orientation. Thus far, no "gay gene" has been found -- at least not in terms of incontrovertible and accepted science. Yet, it is now claimed that a growing body of evidence indicates that biological factors may at least contribute to sexual orientation.

Many of us have figured this out a long time ago without the need of Doctors to tell us. Maybe because we have a deeper understanding of ourselves then most straight people... I know I personally have always believed that gender and sexuality are separate things, and determined at birth. Hence why I am a Transgendered Lesbian.

Of course, not everyone feels this way, and its entirely possible that the theory is wrong.

What makes the sheep "sexual partner preference testing" research so interesting is that the same scientists who are documenting the rather surprising sexual behaviors of male sheep think they can also change the sexual orientation of the animals. In other words, finding a biological causation for homosexuality may also lead to the discovery of a "cure" for the same phenomenon.

Hasn't this already been tried and failed enough times that we'd be tired of thinking this way? Human beings are human beings, not meant to be messed with in the manner they are describing. You'll see why I am horrified at the thought of the kind of 'cure' he's describing.

Homosexual activists have claimed that sexual orientation cannot be changed. What if a hormone patch during pregnancy will do the job?

I shudder every time I read that. They are advocating using hormone treatments to affect the fetus. Does this guy realize, the running theory on why transgendered people exist is because of problems with fetus development relating to hormones. The mind and body develop differently because of over/non exposure to hormones, leading to individuals with the gender of the mind different from the physical gender.

So, in other words, this 'treatment' might create a whole new generation of babies with Gender Dysphoria in some sense. Oh yes, brilliant. Do what the drug companies managed to do unintentionally with their pills over the years.
